Weekend Coffee Share at the PanAm Games

If we were having coffee, we’d be watching the Pan Am Games in my hometown of Toronto. I really want to go see Trampoline, but those tickets have been sold out for a long time. Perhaps we can scalp some? If not, we’ll watch it live on the iPad via the CBC app.

In between the athletes’ jumps, I’ll tell you the highlight of my week has been gymnastics. Not only did I see the Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics finals at the Pan Am Games on Tuesday, I started Trampoline Club on Monday and had regular gymnastics class on Wednesday. I must have been inspired by the athletes I saw Tuesday (we were sitting right by the uneven bars – my favourite event!) because I really gave it my all in class the next day and now my arms ache. But that’s how I get stronger, right?

I didn’t take many pictures, but here are a few from the Pan Am festivities this week:

After I’ve talked your ear off about gymnastics, you ask how the writing is going, because we’re writers and this is usually what we talk about. I sigh, trying to release the stress and calm my nerves, but it does no good. Maybe I should be drinking decaf. I explain I’ve had barely any time to write my novel because this game script is four times longer than expected. Yes, not twice as long, four times as long. That’s the thing about working in a new industry on a new game – no one has quite figured out what the formula is and assumptions were made about the length of the scripts that were way off. Live and learn, right? But for now that leaves me struggling to meet deadlines and working every weekend this month.

With that, I’d better say goodbye and get back to work. I won’t have time to meet for coffee again until next month, so I wish you well in all your endeavours (whether they be writing or enjoying summer vacation) and wave goodbye. See you in August!

  1. Good luck with the writing! Sounds like you’ve got a busy time of it ahead.

Love those photos. I always enjoy watching gymnastics when it’s on TV, but I’ve never been to an actual competition. I’m sure it’s exciting.

See you on the other side. 😉

    1. Thanks, Diana! Yes, gymnastics is exciting when you’re at an actual competition because you can hear the crowd gasp and ahh and clap at every trick. You can also feel the crowd cringe and sigh when there’s a mistake. You don’t get to hear that on TV, so it was a pleasant surprise for me to realize all the spectators were so involved.

Yes, see you on the other side of this job. 😉 Thanks for the comment!

  2. Awesome photos, and I like what you’ve done with that blurb at the end — you may have been doing it for awhile, but I just now noticed. I’m (tentatively) back on the internet. Visiting all the coffee posts from today right now.

  3. I’m not one for sports, especially on TV but I have always enjoyed watching gymnastics during the Olympic games. I hope you get to enjoy watching!

    1. Thanks, Corina! I like watching sports, some more than others, but gymnastics is especially interesting now that I kind of know first hand how ridiculously hard it is. 🙂

  4. I love that the Pan Am games are here in Toronto! So exciting for the city but I’d wish there would be more about the athletes and less about the silly HOV lanes!!! We looked at the trampoline for tickets too, but going to see women’s baseball instead. Good luck on your script!!!

    1. I completely agree! I wish the media had seemed more excited about the Games and spread enthusiasm instead of dissatisfaction. Though at the sporting events, spirits are high. Lots of people in Toronto are enjoying the Games and it was nice to see the stadium packed for my favourite sport. Enjoy the baseball game!
