If we were having coffee, I’d have you over to my house so I could chat and clean at the same time. I have to get ready for our biannual Grilled Cheese Party!
This is also a birthday party since my boyfriend and I are both May babies. Birthdays are a great excuse to see friends, though I’m sad that I need excuses, but that’s my own doing. I’m so obsessed with finishing a book that I’ve become uncharacteristically antisocial. To that end, I plan to steer all party conversations towards what everyone else is up to… or cheese. I don’t want to talk about me. Hopefully by the next party I’ll have some novel news to share.
If we were having coffee I would tell you that I’ve started a new gig writing a dating/adventure game called LongStory. This is my first gaming script and I’m learning all about story variables and branches. Once a friend asked me how I kept everything straight that happened in my novel, and I shrugged and said it wasn’t hard. However, a game where the player gets to choose between multiple options that affect the direction and outcome of the story, all of which have to be written separately but also intersect, that is a challenge! And I’m really enjoying it!
If we were having coffee I’d also tell you that blogger and writer Melissa Barker-Simpson challenged me and Robin to some freestyle writing. This, I admit, is not something I’ve ever done. I am a plotter through and through. However it sounds like a fun challenge – write for 5, 10 or 15 minutes without stopping or editing. Melissa gave us a topic, but I have not looked at it yet because that’s part of the challenge – you can’t think about what you’re going to write before you write it.
I was going to do this challenge today during coffee, but alas, I’ve run out of time. Plus I need to go buy butter. Grilled Cheese parties require a lot of butter! But in the near future, Robin and I will surprise you all with a post featuring our freestyle writing! Stay tuned!
And with that, I must bid adieu. Unless of course you’re staying for grilled cheese. 🙂

Don’t know how I missed this one. Happy birthday, Heather!
Thanks, Sue!
A grilled cheese party!!?? That’s brilliant! I’ll have to give it a try sometime. I’ve done sushi parties before, but grilled cheese just..seems like that’ can’t go wrong!
Yep, butter, cheese and bread – pretty much guaranteed deliciousness!
Hi Heather, what an awesome idea for a party. I’ve never been to a grilled cheese party, but I looooooove grilled cheese–especially with tomatoes. I’m interested to read some of your freestyle writing in the near future. Have a great weekend! 🙂 Shelah
Grilled cheese with tomatoes was one of my favourite things growing up! Hope you had a great weekend too, Shelah!
Heck yeah I’ll stay for a grilled cheese birthday party. That sounds like a blast. =D
Indeed! And for us writers, someone even made a coffee grilled cheese. Sounds implausible, but it was surprisingly delicious!
A grilled cheese birthday party!?! Oh, that sounds amazing! Here’s hoping it was, and I hope the writing goes well this week!!
The party was a blast! And thanks for the well-wishes on the writing – I’m going to need it!
Now I want a grilled cheese sandwich, but without the party. More grill cheese for me.
The thing about hosting the party is that you are left with more cheese and bread than a sane person could ever eat! We now have to have friends over for more grilled cheese next weekend and the weekend after that!
A grilled cheese party sounds like great fun! There’s a restaurant in Ithaca where you can get a burger between two grilled cheese sandwiches…it’s heavenly, but deadly.
Ha! We’ve had sushi grilled cheese, French Toast grilled cheese, lobster bisque grilled cheese, but no one has made a burger grilled cheese at any of our parties yet. Maybe the next one!
What a cute party theme/idea! Love it! The closest thing to that I’ve ever experienced was bake when I was a teen. On Sunday evenings, after church, we’d meet at one home or another and have a Sundea Social. Everyone brought their favorite Sunday toppings and the hosts provided ice cream.
My own WeekendCoffeeShare is at Life & Faith in Caneyhead.
Parties where people eat are always fun! Grilled cheese is the new ice cream. 😉
Cool party you’re having. Truly sounds like a very busy month for you. 🙂

It is! And I didn’t even mention the grant I’m getting ready to apply for. I’m terrified that June is only 2 weeks away!
Grilled cheese party! What a fun idea. You’ll have to tell us more about it.
Let us know how your freestyle writing challenge goes. I haven’t done free writing in a while.
A grilled cheese party sounds awesome! Have a fun party!
Thanks! 45 minutes and counting… 🙂
I’ve tried CYOA before and I can’t seem to make it work. Good luck with the game, Heather.
Thanks, Rose! I’m channeling my inner ten-year-old. CYOA forever!
Your grilled cheese party is such a great idea! And I love that you two do it every year as a birthday bash. The photos from the last few year’s parties look like it’s always a blast.
One of these years I’m going to hop a plane and join into the fun. : )
You should! My photos never seem to do the food justice, but I have a new phone so I’ll try to take some mouthwatering pictures and share them on Twitter/FB.
A grilled cheese party is like a dream come true!! I live in Wisconsin so we are big on cheese here 😉 That sounds like a blast!
You should host one! Especially in Winsconsin. It was a funny little idea my boyfriend had a few years ago, and our friends have embraced it with such enthusiasm that we now have to have two a year!
I’m totally staying for grilled cheese! It sounds like an awesome party 😀 Your new gig sounds fascinating. I’ve always wanted to write a choose your own adventure. Maybe one day…I’ll know where to come for some tips!
The CYOA part of game writing is what draws me to it. I loved CYOA books as a kid! And I’ll have to write a post with some gamer writer tips when I have a bit more experience on this project.
Hope you wore stretchy pants! This Grilled Cheese Party is going to be epic! 😉
